Yucatecan huipiles take on different role in Qatar

Mérida, Yucatán — For every shipment container that arrives in Progreso’s port, another container heads out with Yucatecan products for sale.

The United States happily takes in Yucatán’s sauces, textiles, craft beer and plastic products.

But some items travel even further, and are adapted to the customs of other countries.

Like the Yucatecan guayabera, the traditional huipil is popular in Qatar. From Mexico to Central America, different variations of the traditional, elaborately embroidered dress are worn by indigenous women.

But unlike the Yucatecan guayabera, this loose-fitting tunic is not worn on the streets in the Arab country. Huipiles are worn in private, by women when bathing. The head-to-toe garment lets the women conform with Islamic modesty standards, a story in today’s Mileneo reports.

Hidden global markets for Yucatecan products have yet to be tapped.

Ernesto Herrera Novelo, the head of the Secretariat of Economic Development (Sefoe), stressed that his department is working so that any Yucatecan producer can enter the export market with a dealer who knows marketing channels.

Yucatecan craftsmen have stood out for being innovative, he said.
