Mérida, Yucatán — Packing ample samples of achiote and recado negro, the city’s director of tourism heads to Denmark next weekend to join an elite network of global gourmands.

Carolina Cárdenas Sosa will represent the city, which is the newest member of the Délice Network, allowing representatives to mingle with peers in 29 other cities that make up the network.

The trip is an opportunity to further establish Yucatán’s prominence in the world of cuisine while promoting culinary tourism.

Chef Pedro Evia Puerto will accompany her to present a cookbook of Yucatecan gastronomy. Evia Puerto runs the kitchen at Ku’uk, one of the city’s most innovative and highly praised restaurants.

As part of the Délice Network, Mérida joins Barcelona, Brussels, Chicago, Lisbon, Madrid, Puebla and Turin, among others.

The network, created 10 years ago in Lyon, France, is a global community for cities with a strong culinary tradition.

Cárdenas Sosa noted that tourism in Mérida has grown 14.7 percent over 2016. U.S. travel warnings have had minimal effect on the city, since American tourists account for a relatively small piece of the market. International tourists make up 20 percent of all visitors, and comprise a diverse array of countries.

The city reportedly paid 62,000 pesos to join the club.
