Yucatecan cellist joins world concert tour

Yucatecan cellist Ana Isabel Chan Flores has been selected among the 80 most talented musicians from 27 countries, beating 1,300 other candidates to join the 2016 concert season of the YOA Orchestra of the Americas.

Chan is an honors graduate from the University of Music in Vienna, and is conducting master’s studies at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts in Graz, Austria.

The YOA will perform in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, Denmark and Germany this summer. The world-class symphony orchestra consists of performers age 18-30 from 27 countries.

The YOA organization was created in 2001 inspired by the youth symphonic orchestral movement aimed at social development projects through music in Latin American countries, on the initiative and vision of the New England Conservatory, with the collaboration of the Rockefeller Center of Latin American Studies, Harvard University, the organization of American States, the inter-American Development FESNOJIV of Venezuela foundation among other large institutions.

Its principal advisors are Maestro Placido Domingo, as artistic director, and Mexican conductor Maestro Carlos Miguel Prieto.

The musicians in the YOA receive master classes from musicians representing the most important orchestras in the world: the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Symphony, Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Montreal Symphony, Boston Symphony, Opera Rome, Brussels Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, Royal Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra are among them.

The YOA has had as guest conductors Lorin Maazel, Valery Gergiev, Kent Nagano and solo musicians including Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, Sarah Chang, Vadim Repin, Julian Rachlin, Nelson Freire, Alisa Weilerstein, Louis Lortie, Ingrid Fliter, James Ehnes, Gabriela Montero, Paquito d’Rivera, Antonio Meneses, Matt Haimovitz, Ildar Abdrazakov, Mariachi Vargas, Danilo Perez, Horacio Lavandera, Ilya Gringolts, Philippe Quint, Alex Klein.

Yucatán’s Anna Isabel Chan Flores has studied music in France, Spain, Mexico and Austria.
