Hunucmá, Yucatán — A tradition is returning to Yucatan, says President Enrique Peña Nieto.
After a public ceremony and three private events, Mexico’s President Enrique Peña Nieto on Monday concluded his tour of Yucatán.
The main event was the ceremonial opening of Grupo Modelo’s giant Yucatecan brewery in the new industrial park at Hunucmá. A large group of business executives and politicians attended the ceremony, some visibly affected by the heat.
The historic Cervecería Yucateca operated for generations in Mérida, but was acquired by beer giant Grupo Modelo in 1979, which closed the Centro facilities in 2002.
Afterwards, the president took a helicopter to Progreso to see and inaugurate the city’s new viaduct, which runs parallel to the city’s famous pier and is linked to Latin Americas largest industrial shipyard. The viaduct is 2.5 km or 1.55 miles long, 14 meters or 46 feet wide, ample for trucks with oversized cargo.
He also visited the Palacio Cantón, where he recorded a promotional video, and a branch of the confectionery Tere Cazola in the north of the city, where he sampled some brioche.
In the museum, he admired the mansion’s renovation work and spoke to reporters about the pleasure he takes in visiting Yucatán.
This is the museum’s first presidential visit since 1999, when then President Ernesto Zedillo hosted U.S. President Bill Clinton.
