Progreso, Yucatan — With the summer holiday season underway, the state government has refused to loosen restrictions on Sunday alcohol sales on the beach.
Beachfront bar and restaurant owners, fronted by the National Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism of Merida (Canaco-Servitur), were denied permission to serve drinks for two additional hours, until 7 p.m., on Sundays. The rules haven’t been loosened in this way since 2017.
Officials said that, after talking to state police, they wanted to keep safety risks to others at a minimum.
Alcohol sales are allowed between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m., except on Sunday, when sales are restricted to 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
