The president of Mexico City-based American Society of Mexico predicted that Yucatán’s U.S. retiree population will increase in the coming years.
Larry D. Rubin said citizens from states such as Minnesota, Georgia and Florida have identified Yucatán as a safe and enjoyable place to settle.

Along with this migration of foreigners, Rubin predicted that investments will come from people who have small and medium enterprises. U.S. tourism in Yucatán will also increase as travelers continue to discover natural destinations in an atmosphere of safety and tranquility.
Just over 10,000 U.S. citizens live in Mérida, American Consul Courtney Beale said when announcing the construction of new offices at Via Montejo.
Speaking at a breakfast with the Mexican Institute of Finance Executives, Rubin said he will meet with Yucatán Gov. Mauricio Vila Dosal to discuss ways to improve investments and tourism, bringing more jobs and wages for Yucatecans.
“Yucatán enjoys a good reputation in the United States, has never had a violence alert for tourism and therefore, Americans come, and when they visit they want to stay,” he said.
Rubin, 44, had been named as a contender for U.S. ambassador to Mexico, but has distanced himself from President Donald Trump, who instead selected William H. Duncan. He is still considered the party’s representative in Mexico.
He is also managing partner of DHR International, a global executive search firm, and is a columnist for Reforma, CNN Expansión and Forbes. Born and raised in Mexico City to a Clevelander father and Mexican mother, Rubin holds dual U.S.-Mexican citizenship.
