Yucatán Symphony’s 3rd program has a touch of brass

Two musicians from the Yucatán Symphony Orchestra’s brass section will be featured this weekend.

Mérida, Yucatán — “The Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2,” by the 19th-century Hungarian composer Franz Liszt, and the “Concert for Two Trombones,” by Frigyes Hidas, are highlights this weekend at the Yucatán Symphony Orchestra.

They will be performed, featuring OSY musicians Wílliam Broverman and Todor Ivanov at the Peón Contreras on Friday and Sunday.

This is a good concert to introduce a young listener to the symphony. Liszt’s work has been appropriated by Hollywood with its use in “Mickey Mouse,” “Tom and Jerry,” “Woody Woodpecker,” “Bugs Bunny” and “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” animations.

The “Concert for Two Trombones” is more contemporary work from another Hungarian composer. Hidas was the musical director of the National Theater in Budapest from 1951 to 1966 and at the city’s Operetta Theater from 1974 to 1979. He died in 2007.

The final part of the third program features “Symphony No. 2 in D Major”composed by the German composer Johannes Brahms in the summer of 1877 during a visit to the Austrian Alps. The work is compared with Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony (Pastoral).

Broverman, from British Columbia, Canada, has enough versatility to perform with both the McGill University Symphony and jazz ensembles.

Ivanov, from Varaza, Bulgaria, is an award-winning musician who won the first places in competitions such as Young Musical Talents in Sofia and the International Youth Festival of Purmerade, Holland, as well as the prize for the best young participant in the Orfeo International Music Festival in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria.

Tickets for this, the third program of the current season, are available at the José Peón Contreras Theater ticket office for 80, 100, 150 and 200 pesos.
