Fifteen COVID-19 patients died, including a 14-year-old patient, Yucatan health authorities said on Sunday as they announced 159 new coronavirus cases. Over 1,000 new infections have been detected in the past seven days.
After a modest dip the day before, hospitalizations shot up by 47, an exceptionally large increase for a single day, to reach 404. That number does not include the number of patients in hospital beds waiting for a diagnosis. An auxiliary space for recuperating patients will start filling beds Monday at the Siglo XXI convention center.
Dra. Patricia Muños Miranda, head of the Program Against Respiratory Diseases, also indicated that recoveries outnumbered infections when she said 171 patients were declared free from COVID-19. Yucatan’s recovery rate stands at 74%.
New infections included 94 in Mérida, 13 in Valladolid and seven in Progreso. More cases were found in Motul, Ticul, Bokobá, Chemax, Hunucmá, Izamal, Kanasín, Tekax, Tixkokob, Akil, Baca, Chapab, Chichimilá, Chumayel, Kinchil, Kopomá, Peto, Samahil, Tecoh, Tekom, Temozón, Tizimín, Umán and Yobaín. Two people from outside Yucatan, and possibly from abroad, were also added to the list of new cases.
A 14-year-old Merida boy with leukemia was the youngest to die. A Ticul man, 96, was the oldest and had no preexisting conditions.
