Merida, Yucatan — With the opening of the Faro del Mayab Hospital, Yucatan the center of quality medical services in southeastern Mexico and Central America, Gov. Mauricio Vila Dosal said Friday during the inauguration of the modern nine-story facility.
“Today, from Puebla to Panama, Yucatan has established itself as the place where people come to study, work and make use of health services,” said the Vila Dosal.
More than 1 billion pesos were invested in the new hospital in the Temozon Norte neighborhood, north of the Periferico. More than 500 direct jobs — 90% filled by locals — are generated by Merida’s seventh private hospital.
During the inauguration ceremony, the governor recalled how he witnessed Faro del Mayab’s progress since the first stone was laid three years ago.
“This hospital will come to establish Yucatan as one of the best places to live, because it is already one of the safest in Mexico, with the best quality of life, but without a doubt, it already has high quality infrastructure,” the governor said.
“Merida, our capital of the state of Yucatan, is safer than any city in the United States and that’s not what I say, that’s what the security indexes say,” said Vila Dosal.
The Faro del Mayab Hospital has the capacity to provide more than 300,000 medical consultations and serve more than 18,000 hospitalized patients per year. It will specialize in areas ranging from emergency services to cardiology to plastic surgery.
The hospital has 55 inpatient beds, six intensive-care beds, five operating rooms, two endoscopy rooms, two obstetrics operating rooms, 10 emergency observation rooms, a Hemodynamics room and two rooms for childbirth and recovery.
In addition, it has equipment such as mastgraph, MRI, four hemodialysis machines, two x-ray machines, two ultrasound and computerized axial tomography equipment.
The hospital is managed by the Christus Muguerza health system, which has numerous facilities in northern Mexico. This is the organization’s first venture in southern Mexico.
Yucatan’s state tourism department has been working to position the region as a benchmark for national and international medical tourism, seeking a bigger share of a 5-billion-peso market. Mexico ranks second in international medical tourism and receives an average of 1.2 million visitors annually.
