Mexico’s Health Secretariat recognized Yucatan’s traffic crackdown as the most effective in the nation.
The state government has reduced mobility by 66% in its effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Streets have been blocked left and right, from the Centro to the Periferico, and many rural roads have checkpoints to check that drivers are local residents and don’t present viral symptoms. Beach communities are particularly hard to access.
State authorities do not plan to let up. The official goal is to reduce traffic flow as high as 75%.
During a morning press conference with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the Health Undersecretary Hugo López-Gatell gave a shout-out to Yucatan for being the most successful state in the republic in reducing physical mobility.
The state’s success was gauged by tracking data provided by Facebook, Twitter and Google.
The data coincide with an analytical platform coordinated by the National Council for Science and Technology, where official agreed that Yucatan’s population is doing its part, and should continue to do so.
