Yucatan’s economic recovery remains at “orange,” the second-highest level of alert, officials announced late Thursday.
Health officials announced 30 coronavirus deaths, 128 new infections and 195 recoveries that occurred in the past 24 hours. Yucatan’s COVID-19 recovery rate stands at 75.5%.
The reintroduction of the Yucatan’s ban on alcohol sales came Tuesday as a response to discouraging coronavirus data, as well as incidents of residents and visitors ignoring health protocols.
But it was other data that allowed the state to stay in economic-recovery mode and not go backwards into a red-alert lockdown.
Hospital intensive care unit occupancy rose more than 11 points to 55.7%, but total hospital bed occupancy declined slightly from 44.3% to 43.4% thanks to provisional wards built at a Merida convention center and in a prefabricated complex in Valladolid.
A dramatic increase in hospital admissions threatened to bring Yucatan back into the red alert. But the rate of contagion declined, health officials calculated, while the rate of positive COVID-19 tests rose only slightly, from 45.6% to 47%
The total number of deaths since the epidemic began is at 737, and 6,964 cases have been treated at local hospitals.
The most recent fatalities included 18 men and 12 women ranging in age from 41 to 87. Again, the deceased suffered additionally from high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, chronic kidney failure, asthma, COPD, cancer and the effects of smoking. They included 18 from Mérida, two from Valladolid, two from Tizimín, one from abroad, and one each from Kanasín, Hunucmá, Homún, Cuncunul, Tecoh, Umán and Tixkokob.
Hospitalizations declined by 10 to reach 428. The other 539 patients were able to remain at home under quarantine.
Two state legislators were also announced to have contracted coronavirus, and are in quarantine at home.
