Mérida, Yucatán — Love them or hate them, the mighty Walmart is growing mightier. The multinational company has announced a US$200 million distribution center, bringing 10,000 jobs to the region.

The distribution center will serve its many and varied stores in Yucatán.

Walmart is about to open its 40th commercial space in Mérida, and operators seek to streamline its logistical operations while it keeps its countless shelves filled.

The company is the force behind six well-known brands: Walmart, Sam’s Club, Superama, Bodega Aurrera, Mi Bodega Aurrera; Bodega Aurrera Express and Suburbia. Suburbia is due to be sold to the Liverpool chain later this year.

Officials have yet to settle on a location to build their massive warehouse. In the end, they aim to recoup their investment with more time- and fuel-efficient operations.

Walmart’s presence in Yucatan dates to 1995 with the opening of its first price club. Most recently, it inaugurated another Walmart in the Altabrisa neighborhood. From 2012 to 2015, the company opened 12 businesses, a growth spurt of 30 percent, according to a press release.
