Mérida, Yucatán —  More details are emerging about the hotel-shopping complex planned for the airport entrance.

City Express, an economy limited-service chain aimed at domestic business travelers, confirmed that it will build one of the two hotels in the new commercial development. It will be the closest lodging to the international airport, and the Mexico City-based chain’s third location in the city.

City Express Junior opened its second Mérida location in 2016.

Rumors that Walmart will build a supermarket adjacent to the hotels were also confirmed by the hotelier. If the store is indeed a full-fledged Walmart, it will be Mérida’s seventh. Walmart has not spoken publicly about their plans there.

On the grounds of the former beverage distributor, the 20,000-square-meter project will also include a movie theater from a yet-to-be announced chain.

City Express, which is building 20 new hotels across the country this year alone, has 124 branches in Mexico, Colombia, Chile and Costa Rica.

The head of the Confederation of National Chambers of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Concanaco), José Manuel López Campos, hailed the development for serving the tourism and business sectors.

More than 800 million pesos are reportedly invested in this project.
