Vegas-style casinos eyed on Riviera Maya

The Riviera Maya, Acapulco or Baja California could become Mexico’s Las Vegas, an official confirmed yesterday.

Marcela González Salas, gaming director for the Interior Ministry, said the plan seeks to curb the proliferation of bookmakers in urban areas by steering new operations to Vegas-style resort areas.

Once permits are in place, up to 775 new casinos could be established. National laws regulating and allowing casino gambling date from 1947.

The government has been cracking down on illegal or disreputable casino operations, which are estimated to generate 25 billion pesos a year, funneling money to other criminal activity.
