Merida, Yucatan — Sebastian Valle’s first-inning grand slam foreshadowed the Leones’ 7-3 win Wednesday over the Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos before a fully packed Parque Kukulcán Alamo.
“It was a great game for everyone and now we are going for more. We are aware that we were not given the triumphs but we always go out to play hard every day to achieve more success,” said Valle.
The grand slam scored Jonathan Jones, Hector Hernandez and Luis Juarez to give the Leones a 4-0 lead.
The Tecolotes cut into the deficit in the third inning when Domonic Brown hit a three-run home run.
But the Leones extended their lead in the seventh when Yeison Asencio hit his own three-run homer.
Yucatan starter Cesar Valdez (4-0) picked up the win despite allowing three runs over 5 1/3 innings. Opposing starter Gerardo Gutierrez (1-1) took the loss in the Mexican League game after allowing four runs and six hits over 2 1/3 innings.
