In western North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville Sister Cities is preparing to receive a friendly delegation from Valladolid, Yucatán.

The visit from Mayor Alpha Alejandra Tavera Escalante and members of her staff follows a drop-in from a Scottish delegation in September.

While here, the Asheville group will engage in community meetings, educational visits, health and human services roundtable discussions, and tourism and economic development programs. The two cities will collaborate on more ideas and opportunities for Asheville and Valladolid.

Two exchange students from the Valladolid area are studying at Asheville High School for the year. Additionally, Asheville Sister Cities recently completed a project with area Rotary Clubs to purchase 110 wheelchairs that will be sent to Valladolid and another sister city, San Cristobal de las Casas.

Asheville now has seven sister cities around the world: Saumur, France; Vladikavkaz, Russia; Karpenisi, Greece; Osogbo, Nigeria; Valladolid and San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico; and Dunkeld and Birnam, Scotland.

Asheville Mayor Esther E. Manheimer will officially welcome Valladolid’s mayoral delegation at a Reaffirmation Signing Event on Friday, Oct. 13.
