Urban parks expo is new convention center’s first big event

Congreso Internacional de Parques Urbanos

Mérida, Yucatán — With a fitting connection to the city’s La Plancha project the International Convention Center’s first conference will be focused on urban parks.

About 1,500 specialists in public spaces are expected at the first International Congress of Urban Parks on April 25-27.

Sixty exhibitors from Mexico, as well as three from the United States and others from Italy and France, will showcase the most modern and cutting-edge equipment for parks and public spaces.

A well-equipped park costs 2,500 to 4,000 pesos per square meter. A recent model for a successful city park is La Mexicana de Santa Fe, which opened last November in Mexico City. That had a budget of 2 billion pesos, but was funded partly with private money.

Specialists from 20 countries address topics that include Design and Planning; Health and Environment; Economy and Uses of Public Space; Public Function and Citizen Participation.

Some of the countries represented are Singapore, Australia, the United States, Colombia, Argentina, Canada, Spain, Italy, Chile, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Honduras, France and Mexico.

Six hotels are at 100 percent occupancy during the conference, which is expected to generate between 12 and 15 million pesos into the economy.

International groups will tour Mérida’s various parks during planned excursions.

The conference also comes just as Mérida’s “mini-Central Park” makes tangible progress at the former railway yards known as La Plancha. Civil associations are working to make the Gran Parque La Plancha a modern, urban space with relevant cultural offerings.

Entry to the exhibit hall is 500 pesos, and tickets to the entire expo package — including lectures and workshops — is 4,900 pesos.
