U.S.-Mexico poetry conference returns to Mérida

Mérida, Yucatán — Poets from Mexico and the United States have gathered in Mexico for the last six years, most recently in Oaxaca.

They are at work during the day, with week of conference workshops and excursions. At night, they perform free public poetry readings. 

In 2018, it’s Mérida’s turn to host.

The seventh annual U.S. Poets in Mexico Conference will be at Fundación de Artistas Jan. 8-12. 

Poets and conference faculty Joshua Edwards, Hoa Nguyen, Dale Smith, and writer, vocalist and sound artist LaTasha N. Nevada Diggs will provide writing workshops and talks.

Mexican poets Daniela Camacho, Xánath Caraza, José Eugenio Sánchez and others will provide nightly public readings along with faculty and participants. We will visit cultural sites in and around the city.

The conference week coincides with MeridaFest, the city’s cultural festival Jan. 5-Jan. 27. The city festival will include daily and nightly events, including live music, film, dance and theater performances and literary events.

USPiM brings poets together in Mexico to share their work with writing colleagues in intimate workshops with experienced teaching professionals.

Excursions to cultural and archaeological sites are included in the conference feee of $750, which can be paid in 2 installments and includes 22 hours of workshops and three hours of talks, a welcome reception dinner on Sunday, Jan. 7, and a final-night cocktail party on Friday, Jan.12. Hoa Nguyen will be USPiM Poet in Residence in Mérida from Dec. 30, 2017 through Jan. 14, 2018. 

Each conference participant will have the opportunity to give a 15-minute reading during the week of free public readings at Fundacion de Artistas.
