Tulum, Q. Roo — Federal authorities checked in on a 32-room hotel that they said violated several closure notices.

The hotel is on the edge of Tulum National Park.

The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) said the Acuario hotel’s expansion into an adjacent lot failed to respect closure seals three times. When Profepa marks a work site with clausurado posters, work is supposed to cease.

The Acuario work site was first shut down in March for lacking an environmental impact permit to build within the park. But someone removed the closure seals and construction resumed.

Profepa officials came back, however, and again enforced the shutdown, saying that builders lacked environmental authorization granted by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat).

The third visit to the site, on June 5, was more of the same. Inspectors found clausurado signs gone and 669 square meters under active construction.

The report from Profepa was filed with the prosecutor’s office to be included in a criminal complaint from March 13.

The Hotel Acuario site in the Parque Nacional Tulum is at kilometer 230 of the Cancún-Chetumal highway.
