Time is right for Atlanta-Mérida flights, says Aeromexico exec

Mérida, Yucatán — Mérida’s steady growth has convinced Aeromexico to restore a connection it scuttled a decade ago.

Partnering with Delta, the airline plans to resume direct flights to Atlanta on Dec. 1, joining Miami as a link between the Peninsula and the eastern United States.

With Atlanta being Delta’s main hub, the route is more than a way for Yucatán to get to the U.S. From there, they can choose 375 final destinations in 66 countries.

Daily round-trip flights on an Embraer 90 airplane will carry up to 99 passengers, 11 in the premier cabin and 88 in the economy cabin, and with a very comfortable schedule. Flights from Atlanta depart at noon, arriving in Merida about three hours later, or around 2 p.m. local time.

Flights to Atlanta are at 3:10 p.m., arriving in Atlanta before 7 p.m. Eastern time.

Booking on Sunday, flights on Dec. 1 were available for US$527.

Passengers coming from New York City can catch an 8:30 a.m. flight at JFK for a one-hour layover in Atlanta. Tickets as of Sunday were in the US$800 range, and by far offered the fastest option to reach Mérida.

This same route was scuttled about 10 years ago, but a company official expressed confidence in the Delta alliance.

“It’s going to work now,” said the company’s district manager, Lucía Yerbes Fuentes, at a press conference. “It is not a test and is already on the fixed itinerary for flights every day. Every day we see that Mérida is in a process of impressive economic growth.”

She pointed to the new convention center as evidence of Mérida’s growth.

“We are in a good moment,” Yerbes Fuentes said. “We are in the eyes of the world and that gives us the conviction to support the destination of Mérida more.”
