An American diver, Rachelle Simpson, one of eight female divers competing from a height of 20 meters/65.6 feet at the Ik Kil cenote, yesterday beat Mexico’s Adriana Jimenez and California’s Ginger Huber for the title.
Pushed all the way by wildcard Jimenez who claimed her first World Series podium in her home event, Simpson also overcame illness to follow up previous victories in the United States and Norway and make it a clean sweep with another triumph in Mexico.
“I’m so happy,” said Simpson, 26, from San Antonio, Texas. “It’s an indescribable feeling to have won the first Women’s World Series. I was ill yesterday so I was very nervous at the start, but the first two dives went very well. By the time the third one came around I had nothing left and I ended up being a bit short. I was a bit worried after that one that I might not win, but it proved enough, so I’m not complaining!”
Simpson had glowing remarks about the famous Ik Kil cenote, which is part of the Ik Kil Archeological Park by Chichén Itzá.
“This has been the best location so far – it feels really intimate and after Texas and Norway it’s a great way to finish the season. I’m already thinking about next year and it will be a case of going back home, doing lots of training and coming back even better.”
The men’s final is scheduled for today.
