Mérida, Yucatán — As the Symphony season begins today, concert-goers might notice some tiny writing, naturally in Spanish, on the back of their tickets.

And any gentlemen who showed up in shorts and sandals might blush when they read it.

“It is recommended to wear formal and appropriate clothes to attend the concerts. For gentlemen, it is recommended to wear long pants and closed shoes,” is what the ticket says, in Spanish. Perhaps it should have been written in English, too.

Expats on social media have chastised their peers for dressing for the beach when attending the Symphony in a formal, grand theater.
