Mérida, Yucatán — More than half a million kids in public and private schools are getting ready for their well-earned summer break.

Classrooms are on various calendars, and the 72 percent of schools with the shorter 185-day timeframe begin summer vacation when the bell rings Friday.

That encompasses 300,000 students, from preschool to high school, said Víctor Caballero Durán, head of the Secretary of Education of the Government of the State of Yucatán (Segey).

Most students in Yucatán are in primary school, where 227,000 students and 9,297 teachers are placed throughout 1,395 educational institutions.

Students with a 200-day school calendar have a shorter break. Their classes end 15 school days later, on Friday, July 21. Everyone reports back to class on Monday, Aug. 28.

For university students, summer often means more school work. At Mayab University, for example, 4,033 undergraduate and graduate students will still be buried in school activities, reports Sipse.
