Mérida, Yucatán — Hotel occupancy in the city during the 2016 summer holiday period rose 6.1 percent compared with the same period last year.

During the region’s supposed high-temperature low season, six of 10 hotel rooms were busy during July and August, the Mexican Chamber of Hotels Yucatan, or CMHY, reported.

In presenting its monthly occupation, CMHY president, Ricardo Dajer Nahum,  said that hotel occupancy across the state recorded a summertime increase of 5.85 percent. During the first eight months, hotels in Yucatán were filled at 52.21 percent, 1.91 percent more than the same period last year.

In the city, 85 percent of visitors were Mexican nationals, with the rest predominantly from the U.S., France and Germany, in that order.

In August, the archaeological site of Chichén Itzá recorded an occupancy rate of 39.81 percent, 4 percent more than in August 2015; Uxmal was 26.62 percent, or 1 percent higher, and in Izamal, 40 percent, or 6.34 percent higher.
