Mérida, Yucatán — While the faithful observed Good Friday, the streets were noticeably quieter. Commercial activity and commuter traffic was down by about half, reports Diario de Yucatán.
The streets possessed a calm similar to Christmas or New Year’s Day, said Commander Mario Arturo Romero Escalante, the director of the Municipal Police.
It was a good day to be a pedestrian, or to hop a ride on tour buses and horse-drawn carriages. The sidewalks were filled with people walking freely from place to place, the newspaper observed.
Diario noted that the Monumento a la Patria on the Paseo de Montejo shined in its splendor while tourists posed for pictures during the holy holiday.
