Mérida, Yucatán — Wednesday’s Paseo de las Ánimas, which in recent years attracted tens of thousands of participants, requires several road closures hours before the procession begins at 6 p.m.

Although the event begins in the evening, municipal and state police will coordinate public security efforts starting at 9 a..m.

The highlight of the city’s Hanal Pixan festival last year drew 50,000 people, most of them in costume, who made their way from the general cemetery to the San Juan Arch, 20 blocks north along Calle 66 and, closer to the arch, Calle 64.

The streets will be lined with hundreds of traditional altars associated with Day of the Dead and Hanal Pixan ceremonies. Live music is also on tap.

The first closure is at 66 and 77, where a temporary stage will be built. At 10 a.m., 64 and 75 will be blocked to traffic.

The entire route will be shut down at 2 p.m., and re-opened late in the evening.

Calle 64’s intersections at 69, 71, 73, 77 and 87 will be open to vehicles until 6 p.m. Drivers will be directed to alternate routes on calles 60, 62, 68 and 70.
