Special Olympics stars in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Q. Roo. — The International Paranational Open will take place here from Oct. 31 to Nov. 7, with the best swimmers heading to the Pan/Parapan American Games in Toronto.

From there, competitors will move on to the 2015 world championships in Scotland.

Among the Special Olympics stars participating in the competition are multi-medalist Gustavo Sánchez Martínez, Patricia Valle, Arnulfo Castorena, Doramitzi Gonzalez and Pedro Rangel, all among 185 swimmers from nine countries who will be competing to be selected for the regional Toronto games in 2015.

Swimmers from Colombia, Russia, Ecuador, Argentina, Arab Emirates, Singapore and possibly Egypt will vie for their spot in Toronto.

The Mexican swimmers will be accompanied by the president of Mexico’s Para-Olympic Committee Pablo Larraga, and the qualified sports subdirector of the National System of Culture and Sports, Othon Diaz.

The swimmers were selected by athletic associations for the blind and visually impaired, of special sports activities, in wheelchairs and with cerebral palsy.
