The Progreso police officer assassinated during a knife attack was fired by state police in 2011 after he was charged with gang robbery in his native Hunucmá, an archived SSP press release revealed.
Luis Manuel Pacheco Chuc was 32 years old when he and two others held up a 76-year-old mototaxi operator and took his wallet containing 420 pesos, the SSP statement said. The document was published on the local news site Progreso Hoy.
Nearly two weeks ago, a still-unexplained gang attack on the officer left him stabbed in the jugular vein with a knife while he was working an overnight shift in a corner police booth.
The subjects fled while the officer sought help at a nearby convenience store, where he bled to death. The attackers have not been found.
Now, the newspaper called it “striking” that Pacheco Chuc passed a background check and was allowed to serve as a municipal police officer in the port city.
The motorcycle taxi driver was in the San Juan neighborhood of Hunucmá when the three intoxicated subjects threatened him with something that resembled a pistol and took his wallet, the press release said.
“The SSP reiterates that it has not allowed and will not allow officers to fail in their mission to serve and protect society and that as well as rewarding those who comply, it also punishes those who commit offenses and dishonest acts,” the SSP concluded at the time.
It was unknown if the police officer was convicted or served prison time after the case was presented to the state attorney.
Relatives of the slain officer reported that as of Sunday, Pacheco Chuc’s remains have not been released for burial.
