After spreading across over 6,000 pristine acres, the fire in the Sian Ka’an nature reserve is 70% under control, said Quintana Roo Delegate Arturo Abreu Marín.
The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) and the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp) said the fire stopped spreading after 124 firefighters worked to control the blaze.
The fire, south of Tulum, was attributed to drought and heat. It is unknown how many pumas, monkeys and other species were lost.
“The incident still has active points that are being dealt with manually through gaps and direct attack,” he explained.
He noted that rescue crew are still risking their lives at the site.
The Sian Ka’an reserve is a UNESCO landmarked jungle with wetlands, coral reef and Mayan archaeological sites.
