Progreso, Yucatán — Following tradition, and lured by pleasant weather, thousands of vacationers left the city and hit the beach for the start of Semana Santa, or Holy Week.

For Palm Sunday, just over 50,000 visitors arrived in Progreso, 30,000 of them strolling the malecon, according to Diario de Yucatán. Others chose to enjoy the ports of Chicxulub, Chelem and Chuburna.

The first 3,000 visitors came to the Corre Sobre el Mar foot race on the pier. The race, organized by the Port Authority, benefits soup kitchens and centers for people with physical and mental disabilities.

Musical entertainment sponsored by a beer company was presented at the Parque de la Paz. On Easter Sunday, more live music will be offered to round out the week.

Most visitors brought coolers with beer, soft drinks and food consumed under rented umbrellas on the boardwalk, the newspaper observed. There were also many walkers who occupied restaurants’ palapas, where they ordered fried fish and ceviche.
