Mérida, Yucatán — While many of the city’s faithful will be keeping their trees and nativity scenes on view until early February, 46 city workers have been given a Jan. 15 deadline to pack in any sign of Christmas.
Replacing 1,500 poinsettias are more than 2,000 oleander, rushfoil, cordylines and crown of thorns in parks and public squares as the city says farewell to the holiday season.
The Directorate of Municipal Utility also packed up more than 1,500 Christmas decorations that had been erected in major parks and along city streets. Among the holiday decorations in retreat, a new 16-meter-high Christmas tree in Parque Recreativo East in Fracc. Del Parque.
Canul biologist Erika Chan, head of the municipal nursery, announced that among the ornamental plants to be planted are the Oleander, Ribbons, Codelines, Crotos and thorns of Christ, among others.
Last season’s poinsettias will be next season’s poinsettias, as well; they will to be taken to the municipal nursery to be transplanted and pruned to reappear in December.
