Mérida, Yucatán — Following complaints from neighbors, the Municipal Police closed two Centro night clubs early this morning, alleging they were operating illegally.
At 2 a.m., Casa Nohoch, on Calle 60 between 47 and 49, was cited by police for illegally was charging a 35-peso cover charge and otherwise not operating within the scope of its permits.
Minutes later, around the corner on Calle 47 between 60 and 58, Jardin Santana Restobar was found to be playing overly loud music, and was forced to shut its doors.
Residents of Santa Ana have expressed concern at the number of bars and restaurants opening in the neighborhood, or petitioning to do so.
“As you know, we remain concerned about the number of restaurants and bars that wish to open, threatening the residential character of our neighborhood with garbage, late-night noise, and crowds of intoxicated people,” wrote the administrator of the Vecinos Barrio Santa Ana Facebook group.
“Over the last several months we have engaged the Ayuntamiento in a series of discussions and administrative actions designed to protect our property values and ensure our tranquility. The officials who have met with us have been open, helpful and concerned.”
While plans for a restaurant and bar at Calle 58 and 51 have been abandoned, another one a block away, at Calle 53, are still in place.
