A bit of rain hasn’t cooled Mérida. By 4 p.m. yesterday, temperatures reached a record 41.5 degrees C/106.7 degrees F, and today, it’s expected to get as hot as 40C/104F.
It was not just the heat, it was the humidity, as high as 99 percent at 5 a.m.
Weather forecasters expect light rain and high temperatures, hovering around the 40C/104F mark for the coming week.
The National Weather Service reported that for today, a low pressure system will spread over the Campeche Sound and southeast of the country. This is coupled with a flow of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, potentially causing heavy rains in Chiapas, Tabasco and Campeche, but only scattered showers with possible thunder in Yucatán and Quintana Roo.
Yucatán is on the cusp of rainy season, when cooling precipitation brings relief to both people and the parched peninsular landscape.
