Playa del Carmen, Q. Roo — A noise crackdown on bars and clubs on Quinta Avenida, or Fifth Avenue, has revealed tensions between nightclubs and the hotels who house many of their patrons.
The city operatives focused on the bars and restaurants between Avenida Constituyentes and Calle 38.
One bar owner questioned the validity of the sting, saying that the city’s decibel meter was not a professional model and not accurate.
“In my place I turned off the music for two minutes and its meters dropped two points,” one bar owner told La Jornada Maya.
Further angering bar owners is what they see as an uneven application of the law. Discos on Calle 12 and the surrounding area are even louder, but authorities have apparently turned a blind eye to them.
José Enrique González Rosas, who leads the city inspectors, said that efforts are concentrated where most of the tourists are.
“The truth is that there has also been very good will,” he said. “There are two or three businesses that have come to comply with the rules and comply with the adjustments.”
The city helps businesses comply with the rules and so far has not punished any bars with fines or closures, he said.
