Progreso, Yucatán — Selfies with the giant P-R-O-G-R-E-S-O landmark will have to be postponed while the letterforms are overhauled for a second time.

The letters have been appearing in nearly every tourist attraction throughout Mexico. Spelling out the name of each municipality, they invite visitors to take selfies with them, and many of them indeed take the bait.

Progreso’s letterforms appeared last July, but were almost immediately either vandalized or battered by the beachfront conditions.

Now they’re gone again, taken away for a three-week overhaul.

They will need to look snappy for the port city’s upcoming 146th anniversary celebration this summer.

Fernando Martinez Estrada, head of Public Works and Services, said that the letters receive daily attention from women in the Department of Cleaning and Sweeping, but, this time, will receive specialized maintenance to the tune of 26,000 pesos.
