Progreso, Yucatan — A corner cantina’s upstairs wall and overhang collapsed early Sunday afternoon, killing three, including 6-year-old girl and possibly her mother.

Thirteen others were reported injured.

Some of the victims were apparently customers in the cantina’s restaurant, which was apparently busy on a sunny Sunday afternoon. But the deaths occurred on the sidewalk, where a group of people were passing by at just the wrong time.

The Cantina Mocambo is a sports bar a block off the malecon and across parque Chasaro Perez.

Photos of the bar on social media indicate a new rooftop palapa bar was inaugurated in December.

Videos broadcast today show the upstairs bar exposed to the street. The upstairs overhang is gone and cinder blocks, cement chunks and other rubble were scattered on the sidewalk at Calle 68 and 21.

A crowd quickly gather to help the injured, and police soon followed, according to media reports. But a video shows victims lying unaided on the ground while spectators complained that ambulances were slow to arrive.

Men pushed a parked car down the street to make way for rescue vehicles that eventually responded.

The cantina has operated since 1933, but the building was extensively remodeled in December.
