The port city of Progreso is on the cusp of obtaining Blue Flag Mexico certification for complying with various environmental protection standards, said Mayor Julián Zacarías Curi.

For a beach or marina to have a Blue Flag, an exclusive world-renowned eco-certification, it needs to demonstrate high-quality environmental management and organize environmental education activities.

On the Peninsula, only 20 Quintana Roo beaches have this badge of honor. A beach in Puerto Morelos received its first Blue Flag designation in July, joining other spots in Bacalar, Cancún, Isla Mujeres and Solidaridad, which is in Playa del Carmen. In Mexico, only 55 beaches and marinas are entitled to fly the blue flag.

The program operates under the auspices of the Foundation for Environmental Education in Copenhagen, Denmark.
