Mérida, Yucatán — With the help of their canine unit, police are making near-daily arrests in the historic venter, said the director of the Municipal Police, Mario Arturo Romero Escalante. Most offences are for small amounts of pot, he said.

Last weekend’s discovery of a backpack in a bus terminal filled with a more substantial amount of marijuana, three kilograms, was an isolated case. “It is not something that happens all the time,” said Romero Escalante.

The owner of the backpack was apparently from the state of Chiapas, he said. The backpack had been left there for days.

Most pot arrests are minor and occur with the help of canine units patrolling the area of San Benito and Lucas de Gálvez markets. The amounts typically seized are enough for personal consumption rather than for distribution.

“We find people with one or two joints, that is, small amounts for consumption,” Escalante Romero told reporters in Spanish, adding that such cases have dropped significantly in the Plaza Grande.

Police here have four canine agents, and they work daily in different shifts.
