Dzidzantún, Yucatán — A man who was possibly the oldest in the state died yesterday at the age of 110.

Filiberto Puc, known more commonly as Don Filo, has died. He was possibly the oldest man in Yucatán, at 110 years old. He died where he was born, in Dzidzantún, an hour northeast of Mérida.

Friends called him hardworking, pleasant, calm and friendly.

Don Filo was a self-made man. At age 14, he learned to harvest henequen, and also worked as a woodcutter, communal land supervisor, farmer and livestock breeder. He worked until he was 102.

He outlived his wife, Maximina May, who died of 37 years ago before giving him eight children. In all he had 112 descendants between children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

In a 2016 interview, he complained that “today, young people do not take care of themselves.” Their drinking and smoking lead to bad health by 50 or 60, he said.

Although he stopped using his bicycle “because people nowadays drive recklessly,” he still ventured out every day, walking to the town’s park, where he met with his friends and enjoyed the shade of the carob trees.

The oldest man in all of Mexico, Jesús Castillo Rangel, died last month in Quintana Roo at the age of 121.
