Municipal police in Mérida warn that 65 roadblocks and checkpoints will be monitoring drivers Wednesday night. A zero-tolerance policy is in place against drunk driving.

Moreover, Mérida police will use radar guns mainly on the Periférico to record speed and license plates. Tickets will be mailed to the offending vehicle’s owner.

Police cars will also patrol throughout the city to counter social media reports that are meant to help drivers avoid a confrontation with the law.

(Corrected to remove information from Progreso Hoy regarding their breathalyzer program, which had been published in their newspaper as a New Year’s hoax.)
