What constitutes Sunday dinner in Yucatán these days? Is it cochinita pipil, panuchos or papadzules? It could be, but it’s pizza that’s trending online.

Across the country, but particularly in Yucatán, Google has detected a marked increase in online searches for pizza.

Look at this fever chart of Mexico’s web searches for “pizza” over 90 days. The high marks represent Sundays.
Broken down by state, it appears Yucatán is well ahead of this trend.

Over 5 billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year. Yucatán is leading Mexico’s craving for this dish each Sunday. Nationally, people are also Googling international chains such as Pizza Hut and Domino’s, both of which are represented in Mérida, along with Boston’s and Little Caesars.
