The prestigious Fernando García Ponce-Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Ateneo de Yucatán (MACAY) will exhibit Pedro Tec’s vivid photography, the young artist announced today.

The three-month-long show, “Los Mayas Eternos,” will begin with a reception 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25.

Tec’s images, dreamlike black-and-white portraits and landscapes, depict the Mayan world with drama and beauty.

Through photography, digital publishing and social community art, he explores themes of identity, as well as the ancestral, gender and socio-political aspects of the Mayan culture.

Born in Ixil, Yucatán, Tec studied archeology and Mayan culture at the Autonomous University of Yucatan (UADY).

He describes his work as derived from dreams, mystical experiences with the universe and “a tireless therapy to cope with this path called life.”

His work has been presented in museums, galleries, arts centers and festivals around the world.

Among his past exhibitors: Pinacoteca Roque Dalton of the UES, El Salvador University, San Salvador; Alianza Francesa de Mérida; CIESAS-Southeast, San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas; Edificio España, Madrid; V Visual Festival of Ethnography, Maddaloni, Italy; Gran Museo del Mundo Maya, Mérida; and the Faculty of Anthropology of the Universidad Veracruzana, Veracruz.

He obtained the State Prize of the Youth in Arts, Yucatan, and other distinctions such as CONACULTA (2014) and Cultural Promotion A.C. (2017). He was also first-place winner in the VI Visual Ethnography Festival, Maddaloni, Italy, 2015 as well as at the Banamex Culture Development Roots Competition, 2017.

Several of his photographs illustrated the covers of some volumes of the Yucatan Encyclopedia (2018).

The exhibit will remain on view in Sala 8-bis through the end of March.
