Mérida, Yucatán — With more than 351,000 customers, the Junta de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado en Yucatán, otherwise known as the water utility Japay, has promised two innovations by the end of the year.

The first is an agreement with the giant Oxxo convenience store chain to allow water-bill payments at the cash register.

The other is to launch an app for iPhone and Android devices to allow the same kind of transaction.

The latter service also will let customers report problems and complaints, with direct followups from Japay.

Oxxo, founded in 1978, has 14,000 stores in Latin America and is the largest chain of its kind in Mexico.
