A Carnival ship headed to the Yucatan has reported a male passenger missing, but is continuing with its itinerary.
Cruisehive says the Fantasy reported the incident Monday after departing Mobile, Ala., on Dec 15.
Officials say the 22-year-old with special needs was with a group of nine people with three chaperones. They say chaperones told them he ran off from them and hasn’t been seen since.
Chaperones, boat crew, and the Mexican Navy including a canine searched the ship for an entire day and reviewed surveillance footage multiple times.
One person aboard the ship said the captain paged “Luke” several times Sunday night.
The Fantasy is on a five-day cruise of Progreso and the western Caribbean. The search was suspended after an exhaustive effort to find the passenger.
This is the second passenger search aboard a Carnival ship in recent weeks.
The news follows a similar incident on Dec. 14, when Carnival passenger Thomas McElhany went overboard approximately 35 miles south of Islamorada, Fla., during the Victory’s four-night cruise, which made stops in Key West and Cozumel.
The United States Coast Guard suspended its search on Dec. 16 for the 26-year-old passenger. The previous day, representatives for the cruise line told Fox News that “the facts surrounding this unfortunate incident indicate it was an intentional act.”
