Taxis in Yucatan and ride-share cars such as Uber have a year to integrate panic buttons and satellite trackers into their vehicles.

The update to the Yucatan state Transportation Law was published with plenty of time for drivers to comply, lawmakers said.

The law also requires drivers post a certificate that verifies the existence of the panic button as well as the age of the vehicle.

Both the driver and passengers will have access to the button if a trip goes awry. When pressed, the button will alert state police, who will have the live location of the vehicle. Both drivers and passengers have been assault, rape, robbery and murder victims over the years.
