A national architecture magazine has named Yucatan’s Palacio de la Música its Project of the Year for 2019.
Votes were cast by Revista Obras readers who had nominated 174 projects throughout Mexico. Of those, 32 finalists were on the ballot. The award was presented Tuesday night in Mexico City.
“This is a project by Reyes Ríos + Larrain Arquitectos that sets a precedent on how a public building can become an icon in a place where urban space is established and revitalized,” an Obras editor wrote. “Its creators define the architectural design as the insertion of a modern, sensitive and socially oriented building in a physical context of great historical value — because it is located in the historic center of Merida.”
The Work of the Year is the highest honor awarded by Obras.
The Palacio de la Música began construction in December 2015 and ended in June 2018. Its objective is to be a national music dissemination center, and includes an interactive museum, performance spaces and research center.
Merida-based Reyes Ríos-Larráin Arquitectos was credited for “setting a precedent on how a public building can become an icon in the place where urban space is established and revitalized.”
The project was built by Salvaror Reyes Ríos and Josefina Larrain in collaboration with Alejandro Medina Arquitectura, Muñoz Arquitectos, and Quesnel Arquitectos.
