Mérida, Yucatán — With a cello and a piano, the young Flores-Miso duet presents a concert at the Teatro José Peón Contreras tonight at 8.
Anna Isabel Chan Flores, a cellist born in Austria but with Yucatecan roots, and Olena Miso, a pianist from Ukraine, will cover the classical period to the present as part of an international tour, which take them as far away as the island of Haikou, in China.
The concert artists will offer a repertoire with pieces by Beethoven, Debussy and Piazzolla. Rachmaninov’s Opus 19 sonata will also be performed, as they did while at University of Music and Dramatic Art of Graz in Austria, for Anna Isabel’s final exam.
“As it was a lot of work, a long process of months,” Anna Isabel says. “We thought it would be good to take advantage of what we had already prepared and share it not only in the exam but in concerts.”
Olena Miso says she is very happy to perform in Mérida, “to play in this wonderful place” with Anna. “It’s all new to me, new atmosphere, people, culture. It is very interesting,” says the young woman on her first visit to Mexico.
Anna Isabel says she is very happy to play in the homeland of her father, José Luis Chan Sabido.
The duet will continue the tour in Campeche at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, with a concert at the Juan de la Cabada theater.
The concert is presented by Kunst & Music Yucatán, A.C., and the Vienna Music Art Academy Yucatán with the support of sponsors.
Tickets are on sale at the Peón Contreras for 150, 120 and 100 pesos. Teachers and music students will get a discount with their ID. Part of the proceeds will go to the Fundación Emmanuel.
