Mérida, Yucatán – Here’s an opportunity to explore an often overlooked gallery on Calle 60 in the historic district, just north of Parque Santa Lucia.

Oaxacan painter Luis José Ramírez last night debuted the exhibition “De lo Terrenal” (literally “Of the Terrestrial,” or “Earthly”) in the gallery run by Cephcis UNAM.

The UNAM gallery is between Calle 55 and 53 on Calle 60 in Santa Lucia.

It is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Yucatan.

On 20 medium-scale works, the artist depicts everyday people such as musicians, knife sharpeners or fire eaters, and his works are characterized by vivid colors and deep symbolism.

In his 40-year career, Luis has exhibited and lived in Europe. He is a graduate of  la Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas de San Carlos (UNAM), with a postgraduate degree from the National School of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Poland. He has participated in International Art Biennials held in Berlin in 1984 and Florence in 2007 respectively, and has exhibited in the U.S. and Japan. Visit the artist’s website here.

CEPHCIS is the Peninsular Center of Arts and Sciences. UNAM is the Spanish acronym for the National Autonomous University of Mexico, based in Mexico City and the largest university in Latin America. Mérida is home to one of its many satellite campuses.

“De lo Terrenal” will remain open until July 2. The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 3:30 to 8. Not obvious from the street, the CEPHCIS Saint Lucia gallery is easy to overlook. It is near the front entrance at Calle 60, No. 469, between 53 and 55, Centro.
