No more cash payments to border customs agents

As of today, travelers arriving in Mexico will no longer be able to use cash at the customs desk.

The national Tax Administration Service (SAT) will only take debit cards, credit cards or electronic transfers, a move said to bring transparency and practicality to its system, moving it to the “21st century.”

Passengers must pay duty fees if declaring more than US$500 in items.

Customs staff last year collected more than 750 million pesos in cash from passengers, the SAT said.
