The 2015 National Triathlon kicked off at the Paseo de Montejo, launching 19 events beginning this weekend in Mérida and ending Nov. 15 at Xel-Ha Park in Quintana Roo. Space was limited to 2,000 athletes and registration sold out as of today.
On a day normally reserved for family bike riding, today the Paseo de Montejo is blocked off for athletes who will run, cycle and swim in succession. Bleachers, a VIP area with white tablecloths, a medical tent and a recuperation zone are all installed at the Remate between calles 47 and 49. By 8:30 this morning, already rock music was blaring and announcements were being made over loud speakers.
Today, cyclists are being tested with a route that starts in Progreso and ends at the remate. In the Centro, sidewalks are open but most side streets are blocked from even foot traffic today. Pedestrians were left to enter the boulevard from Calle 49. Highway lanes along the entire route from port to remate are being affected.
Participants will learn the official results three hours after the end of the race at www.asdeporte.com.
The first three places in each age category will be awarded with a trophy, as well as the overall winners of the Sprint and Olympic Triathlons.
